Particle physics at high-energy collider experiments requires a quantitative understanding of strong and electroweak hard scattering processes to very high accuracy. The proposed research group aims at this task of precision phenomenology by means of perturbative calculations to higher orders, where computer algebra is an indispensable tool for computations at the two- or three-loop level. Expertise in this area has been acquired in a complete next-to-next-to-leading order calculation for deep-inelastic structure functions as measured very precisely at HERA.

Together with the partners at Würzburg University the research group will target a number of strategic issues and physical observables which will play a key role in precision physics at HERA, the LHC and a potential ILC. Research topics include the strong coupling constant and parton distributions from HERA, scattering processes with massive particles to two loops, for instance top-quark production at the LHC or a future ILC, and Drell-Yan-like scattering processes at the LHC to three loops. The projects will be realized in active pursuit of the mission of the Helmholtz association with respect to cooperation with universities, and they will stimulate education and training of students and young researchers.
