Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ)

Karlsruher Institut of Technology (KIT)

Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR)

This initiative is launched by a Consortium of five major research centers of the Helmholtz Association joining their efforts to propose the onstruction of a new and state-of-the-art beamline in the soft X-ray range at SESAME to be used for a large number of top-class scientific applications. The overall goal of this project is to promote SESAME in its scientific development towards a regional excellence center in the
Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East by creating novel scientific opportunities at this research facility and to foster scientific cooperation between German and European researchers and scientists from SESAME member states. The project will mark a highly visible and internationally recognized contribution to science diplomacy efforts in the Middle East and is full in line with the internationalization targets of the Helmholtz Association. Within the four years long project a soft X-ray beamline at SESAME will be designed, constructed and commissioned. This will act as a seed to create international user consortia contributing to the setup and development of experimental stations, special sample environments and further instrumentations, thus leveraging additional contributions from the SESAME member states. Corresponding training, education and support measures will guarantee the international scientific attractiveness and quality of the beamline as well as secure its long-term scientific use and excellence by creating own scientific user communities and by building up long-lasting cooperation within the SESAME members.
