The “Virtual Institute for Femtosecond X-ray Science” will explore new regimes of matter - radiation interaction with the goal of structure determination of non-crystalline samples. It promotes research and education at the frontiers of photon sciences by exploring and exploiting photon – materials interactions on extremely short time scales, extremely high photon frequencies, and extremely strong photon fields. This is directly linked to the detailed understanding of electron and ion dynamics, bond breaking, and plasma formation in super-intense x-ray beams. The VI will bring together the complementary competence from four institutions. It will draw its strength from the FLASH FEL facility at DESY and from the unique expertise of the partners, who are world leaders of their respective fields, namely, X-ray laser physics, cluster science, structural biology, coherent x-ray science, and particle manipulation using optical lasers. We will perform revolutionary experiments on non-crystalline samples, ranging from clusters to small living cells, and obtain structures with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.
