The goal of this proposal is the investigation of ultrafast magnetization dynamics in complex antiferromagnetic transition metal oxides withnTHz radiation in a pump-probe setup. While the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnets has been explored already to a large degree, only little is known about the interaction of antiferromagnets with ultrashort magnetic pulses. Since the magnon frequencies of antiferromagnets lie in them THz regime, the use of THz radiation sources constitutes an ideal tool to study the dynamics of such systems. Therefore, an optical waveform synthesizer is proposed to provide simultaneously high-energy single-cycle THz pulses as pump and femtosecond XUV pulses up to the M- and L-edges of transition metals from a table-top source as probe. This experiment will be extended to the hard X-ray regime by follow-up studies at the European XFEL. Such a research program could lead magnetic memories and logic devices to yet unreached high speed and into a frequency regime still largely unexplored.
