To build up the joint spin-off of DESY and the Helmholtz Institute Jena named “CLASS 5 PHOTONICS” the project is financed with almost 130 000 EUR by the Helmholtz Association “Helmholtz Enterprise” support program over one year. This funding includes personal and material costs as well as management support given from external consultants. The foundation of the company CLASS 5 PHOTONICS is planned for the end of 2014 during the Helmholtz Enterprise Project. The Helmholtz Enterprise program combined with the assistance and support of the DESY Start-up Office under the leadership of the DESY Technology Transfer Office offers very good conditions for the incubation of a commercial enterprise during the whole start-up phase. Spin-offs find overall support from before until a few years after the foundation. To create room for innovative spin-offs DESY is planning to build an innovation centre on site with the support of the state of Hamburg. The innovation centre will offer office and lab space as well as easy access to the research campus.
The CLASS 5 PHOTONICS company will build very flexible femtosecond-lasers generating short pulses with high performance based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). OPCPA is the future enabling technology; providing tuneable, femtosecond pulse duration, and high power (product of repetition rate times pulse energy), thereby making it possible to reduce experimental or industrial processing times by a factor of 10-100, compared to conventional titanium-sapphire technology. The direct generation and control of the femtosecond pulses are possible because of the special white light source as well as a compact pulse stretcher unit with a patent pending. CLASS 5 PHOTONICS plans to provide designed OPCPA-systems, upgrade modules and individual custom made laser amplifiers to fit your experimental or industrial needs, with pulse energies ranging from 1 µJ to 1 mJ, pulse durations less than 15 fs, and power ranging from 1 W to 100 W. CLASS 5 PHOTONICS is winner of the Start-up Challenge prize organised by OptecNet Deutschland e.V.
